Naval Station Mayport was a massive Navy base, so it had its own jail—not a full-fledged jail, of course, but rather a brig, where enlisted personnel suspected of crimes could be detained pending a court martial or a civilian trial or both. Fletcher had been transported over to the brig after his outburst. After we’d watched the video, Groff had arranged to have Fletcher set up in a small interrogation room so we could speak to him. He was hostile from the get-go, baring his teeth and scrunching up his face in rage the moment he saw us.

“What the hell do you want?” he spat as soon as he laid eyes on Groff. He didn’t seem all too pleased to see Catalina or me either, but it was clear that the lion’s share of his ire was directed toward his uncle.

“Watch your tone,” Groff grumbled darkly as the three of us sat down, but Fletcher just snorted.

“Oh, screw off,” he snickered. “I’m gonna get discharged anyway for trying to hit you, right? So, why should I care now? Honestly, I’m glad I’ll finally be able to get the heck out of this dump.”

“I don’t know what happened to you,” Groff sneered back. “Your parents tried so hard to give you everything, even tried taking you to doctors. You’re just rotten, you know that!? I thought enlisting would help straighten you out, but it’s obvious to me that it was a waste. You’re a lost cause.”

“Yeah, whatever,” Fletcher muttered as he leaned back in his chair. “So, when do I get to go home? Do I have to do community service or something first for trying to hit this blowhard?” He glanced at me and then at Catalina. “I’m not really going to jail, am I? I barely even touched either of you.”

“Mr. Pratt, this isn’t about what happened during the interrogation,” I replied flatly. Fletcher raised an eyebrow at me.

“Okay?” he huffed. “So, what? You’re still trying to pin what happened to that freak on me? I told you I was with some girl I picked up out by The Saltrock.”

“The prostitute you claim you were with?” I asked, and Fletcher glowered at me.

“Not ‘claimed.’” He scoffed. “I’m telling the truth. Alvarez was a little weirdo, but I didn’t—”

“SHUT YOUR MOUTH!” Groff screamed with so much intensity that my ears stung. He slammed his fist down at the table that separated us from Fletcher. The young man’s eyes went wide with surprise as he instinctively leaned back, away from Groff’s voice. “You keep Alvarez’s name out of your mouth, you understand? After what you did—” He stopped short as he looked down at Fletcher with disgust. “I don’t even want to look at you.”

“What are you talking about?” Fletcher muttered, and though he was trying to keep up the tough guy, devil-may-care attitude, it was clear from the tremor in his voice that he was nervous now.

I silently reached into my pocket for my phone and pulled up the video before setting it on the table in front of him.
